Nepal

Thinking of visiting Nepal? You definitely should! From travel tips and guides, get everything you need to know about visiting Nepal!

Currency: Nepalese rupee

Language: Nepali

Visa: Tourist visas can be granted upon your arrival in Nepal. The most convenient entry point for your Visa on Arrival is at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu.

  • 15 days = $30 USD
  • 30 days = $50 USD
  • 90 days = $125 USD

Nepal visas must be paid in USD, Euro, or GBP. In addition, when you turn in your completed application form your passport, you’ll also need to supply the immigration agent with two passport-sized photos of yourself.

Tourist visas can be extended up to a maximum period of 150 days from your initial date of entry. Extensions can only be done at the Immigration Department offices in Kathmandu and Pokhara.

Getting Around Nepal: Airports like Lukla Airport (for those wanting to get to Everest), Pokhara Airport (for those wanting to tackle the Annapurna’s), and Tribhuvan International Airport (for those arriving and departing from Kathmandu) are the country’s three major airports.

Outside of flying around Nepal, overland is your only other option. Road travel in Nepal is long and can be arduous due to road conditions and traffic. But nonetheless, it is the cheapest way to see Nepal!

For booking transportation, check out 12GoAsia to get the latest timetables and prices.

Safety: One of the biggest safety concerns people have when traveling to Nepal is natural disasters. From earthquakes to avalanches and landslides, Nepal has experienced its fair share of natural disasters.

If you are going on a trek, always let someone know your plans and route. Not to mention book with a reliable tour company that knows the area you are traveling in.

Outside of natural disasters, petty theft like pickpocketing and scams are among the top things tourists run into. But hey, those things can happen anywhere. Just be smart and exercise common sense.

If you have plans to travel to Nepal, a great thing to always have with you is travel Insurance. When we spent 1.5 months in Nepal, we had travel insurance through World Nomads. Covering things like medical bills, accidents, and theft, having travel insurance has definitely come in handy for us a time or two, not to mention peace of mind.

Essential Phrases: Even if you are not fluent in Nepali, it’s always nice to know a few words of the local language.

  • Namaste: Hello
  • Dhanyabad: Thank you
  • Maaph garnuhos: Excuse me
  • Pheri bhetaunla: Good Bye
